About

Do you need bark and ambrosia beetle identification and expertise? Are you a government entomologist? Are you a student developing a beetle research project? Do you need an extension agent in charge of forest pests? Are you a researcher fascinated by bark and ambrosia beetles?

If so, come join us for the FIFTH Bark Beetle Academy! This is the biggest educational, scientific, and social event focused on bark and ambrosia beetles. Learn more about these important insects and meet leading bark and ambrosia beetle scientists. You will work directly with specialists, receive state-of-the art identification and management materials, participate in hands-on identification practice, learn how to collect beetles in the field during their peak season, and enjoy a high instructor/student ratio. Learn all you need to know from local and international experts: identify beetles, learn how to use keys, understand scolytine morphology, ecology, damage, and classification, find and diagnose beetles in the field, build your own reference collection, and meet the global community of bark beetle researchers.

What You Will Learn

Applied Aspects

Diagnostics of bark and ambrosia beetles with microscope and in the field, damage and management of pest species across Asia. Great for tree health practitioners.

Hardcore Identification

3 days of hands-on microscope sessions, advanced characters and vocabulary. Essential for students, researchers, and agency entomologists.

Becoming an Expert

Global scope, invasive species, evolutionary relationships, collecting in the field. Designing research and writing publications for high impact.

Travel Details

Transportation

We recommend arriving to one of two airports: 1) Juanda International Airport in Surabaya, from which a group bus transportation (about 2 hours) is being negotiated; 2) Abdul Rachman Shaleh airport in Malang (30 minutes to campus), to which you can fly from Jakarta.

Field Trips

Beetles in timber plantation and in natural forest. Collecting permits will be arranged (though not necessarily export permits).

Lodging

We recommend hotels within walking distance to the University: Swiss-Belinn Malang for top quality, and Everyday Smart hotel and Endotel for better price. We are working on designating lower price for participants. If you wish to reserve your room now, feel free to do so; we recommend mentioning that you are a workshop participant at Universitas Brawijaya.

Foood

Lunches for academy participants will be organized from interesting food vendors in Malang, but the cost is not included in the registration, and participants will pay for the meals.
